Logging On Windows XP in Password Issues

Windows allows you to have Windows password to log on. But at times you might forget this password or it might get expired. In such situations, you cannot log into the system and access the stored data. To solve such problems, you will need to use a password reset disk, log on with administrative rights or reinstall Windows. When you install Windows, you lose data and thus to restore the lost information, data backup is required. However, if a valid data backup is currently unavailable, ntfs data recovery applications should be used.

If your Windows XP (Home, Professional, Tablet PC or Media Center Edition) password expires or you forget it somehow, you should consider following these methods to log on the system (when system is not configured in domain):

• Use password reset disk: The Forgotten Password Wizard allows you to create a password reset disk in Windows XP. This disk contains a single file called userkey.psw (encrypted password) that can help you to recover your personalized settings and account in case you forget the password. You can use this disk by performing these steps:

• Start the system and try to logon with desired user name. You will receive a screen with an error suggesting that your password is incorrect and you should use password reset disk.

• You need to click ‘Use your password reset disk’ option. This will let you to recreate the password for the particular user account.

• You should insert the password reset disk after clicking ‘Next’ in Password Reset Wizard. You will get options to specify the new password.

• Log on as administrator and recreate the password: If you log on as administrator, you can reset the forgotten or expired password. To do so, you should press Ctrl+Alt+Del two times while restarting the system and perform the subsequent steps.

• Reinstall Windows: If you don’t have password reset disk or log on as an administrator, you should reinstall Windows. Since it causes data loss, you need to use your recent data backup to restore data. In case of any backup concerns, use data recovery software. These tools scan the affected media and provide safe data recovery.
